Health insurance

A general health insurance valid for Hungary is a requirement for registration for each semester at the University of Szeged. The insurance needs to provide full coverage for all eventualities, therefore eg. life or accident insurances are not acceptable.

In the academic year 2018/2019 the Generali Studium Insurance is included in the tuition fee of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year students (who started their studies in the academic year 2015/2016 or later).

Types of insurances accepted by the University

• Generali Studium Health Insurance (offered by the University of Szeged)

The STUDIUM health insurance – valid in Hungary - provides full coverage for the costs of justified medical treatment and 50% of coverage of the costs of medicine and therapeutic aids. Costs: 34.000 HUF/ semester.

Note that there are exclusions and cases of relief related to the insurance coverage in which cases the Insurance Company does not cover the costs of treatment (eg. medical treatment arising from the consumption of alcohol and drugs; treatment related to the consequences of illnesses existing, known prior to the commencement of the insurance or earlier; health care services related to pregnancy or child birth; psychiatric and psychotherapy treatment; dental treatment).

For details please read the Terms and Conditions of STUDIUM service financing health insurance carefully!

Costs of medical care received at the University clinics generally do not have to be pre-financed, however if treatment was not justified or falls into the exclusions, the student has to pay for the costs of treatment on spot. In case treatment was justified and the clinic required immediate payment, the costs will be reimbursed by the Insurance Company. Costs of medicine will be reimbursed regularly during the insurance period by the Insurance Company by bank transfer. All invoices (treatment and medication) have to be submitted at the Foreign Students’ Secretariat.

Product Information

• International Health Insurance

International health insurances are only acceptable if they offer full coverage in Hungary. The insurance is usually contracted in the student's home country.

The costs of medical treatments have to be paid by the student. Refund of the costs is to be claimed retrospectively from the student’s insurance company.

• European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

According to the European Union law, citizens from EEA countries are subjects of free medical care (or at reduced cost) in emergency cases or if treatment becomes necessary during their visit abroad (for example, due to illness or an accident), provided they have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) at hand from an EEA member home country.

The EHIC can only be used in the framework of public health care provision. Medical treatment is only offered by surgeries contracted with the Országos Egészségbiztosítási Pénztár (OEP).
